Area Information
Located in a natural reserve on the Whale Coast area of the Western Cape, best known for whale watching and shark cage diving, there is much more on offer, with remote beaches, coastal dune-fields, ancient strandloper caves, remote lighthouses, historic farming communities, incredible fynbos flora and superb landscapes. A few nights on this stretch of coastline adds a real extra dimension to a safari and Cape Town trip
The reserve's 8km of stunning coastline includes gorgeous remote white-sand beaches, backed by high sand dunes.
Some of the sandy bays contain a raised rocky shelf which protects them from the ocean and creates wonderful lagoons for snorkelling and inter-tidal rockpools with an incredible wealth of marine life, including some remarkably aggressive octopuses.
The hinterland is comprised of rare fynbos vegetation, with a myriad of 1500 rare and endemic plant species.
There are also 86 mammal species including bonteboks, Cape mountain zebras, ostriches and baboons, plus 260 bird species.
The reserve is also the most aesthetically pleasing location from which to view whales from the shore Jul-Oct, although from a greater distance than other locations.
