Maratea is a pure delight. Perched high above the sea on Italy's southern Tyrrhenian coast, in the region of Basilicata, it's a good destination for a peaceful longer stay, or for a two or three-night break on a tour of the south. Embellished with lush vegetation, riven by rock-walled coves below well-tended hillside villages, Maratea’s joys might be compared to those of the Amalfi. Perhaps the biggest, most welcome disparity is the number of tourists – far fewer here, and notably fewer non-Italians. You can climb the steep hill above Maratea to see the ruins of the prior settlement, take boat cruises and fishing trips, poke around venerable hilltop churches, or just kick back with a coffee in a perfectly photogenic piazza, watching the sun play on the waters below.

While the neighboring region of Puglia has become popular with tourists, Basilicata is largely undiscovered—one of a few remaining parts of Italy where the culture, food, and wine remain authentic and untouched by the world beyond. The towns people offer a genuine hospitality that makes every visitor feel more like a friend or neighbor than a tourist. It is said that anyone who visits Bernalda cannot resist returning.
